Berlin First Impressions: 12 Reasons We Loved Our 5-Week Summer Stay
Over recent years, Berlin has captured the imagination of travelers worldwide, with many spending weeks or months exploring its vibrant energy. As seasoned nomads, we felt that magnetic pull too—but was now the right time? With one of us hailing from Germany, we pondered delaying our visit. Why choose Berlin's summer buzz over Greece's islands or Spain's coastlines?
Our last trip was in 2004, pre-dating our partnership, and it hadn't fully won us over. Yet, despite the debate, Berlin's allure prevailed. Those five weeks proved the ideal summer escape, immersing us in a city that felt like home from day one. We stayed active, exploring nonstop, and now share our authentic first impressions—drawn from real experience—with deeper guides to follow.

We jotted these insights during a leisurely brunch one of our first mornings:
1. Berlin is remarkably green
Home to 3.3 million residents, this metropolis defies expectations with vast parks and open spaces. What stands out is how locals embrace them for relaxation and fresh air.
2. Berlin thrives on alternative culture
Alternative lifestyles are mainstream here. From artists and punks to hipsters and intellectuals, every subculture flourishes— even niche groups like fiddle-playing Spanish monks likely have their spot.
3. Berlin carries profound historical weight
Amid its trendy vibe, the city's streets echo with pivotal history, keeping its past ever-present.
4. Berlin remains divided in spirit
Once split by the Wall into two nations, today's east and west retain distinct architecture, culture, and attitudes that shape neighborhoods.
5. Berlin bursts with global flavors
Savor Vietnamese pho for lunch, sushi for dinner, Thai or Indian next. Turkish markets and doner kebabs shine with authentic taste everywhere.
6. Berlin is exceptionally bike-friendly
Thousands pedal wide lanes daily. Secure parking abounds, and cyclists share respect with pedestrians and drivers—plus, bikes ride public transport.
7. Berlin feels like an island
Surrounded by Germany yet unGerman in vibe: English dominates streets, local cuisine is rare, and positivity prevails.
8. Berlin is affordably priced
Our five-week rental: €550. Lunches under €5, supermarket beer €0.65/L, and brunches like ours €10—loaded with bread, cheeses, eggs, salads, juice, and coffee.
9. Berlin masterfully blends old and new
Cutting-edge innovation coexists seamlessly with deep history, often captured in a single frame.
10. Berlin is endlessly fun
24-hour clubs, Trabi Safaris, quirky shops, odd museums, markets, riverside beers, airport mini-golf—its witty joie de vivre is unmatched.
11. Berliners embrace ample free time
High unemployment supports artists and creators, filling streets with vibrant energy day and night.
12. Berlin's grit adds character
Unlike pristine Munich, Berlin's abandoned buildings and raw edges hide gems like cafes—grit integrated, not isolated.
