First Impressions of Lanai: Hawaii's Hidden Tropical Gem
Before booking our trip to Lanai, we asked fellow travelers for insights on this small Hawaiian island. Responses were vague—mostly just the word "luxury"—leaving us frustrated and questioning its appeal.
After some thought, we embraced the opportunity to introduce this under-the-radar paradise to our readers. Our passion for turtles and islands (Christy's obsession in particular) convinced us to book the adventure.

Turtle at Shipwreck Beach, Lanai
Lanai stands out remarkably from other Hawaiian islands we've explored, and while it defied easy categorization at first, its unique allure quickly became evident.
From Lahaina Harbor on Maui, we boarded the compact, two-level Expeditions Ferry alongside locals hauling household goods unavailable on rural Lanai.
As we left the serene harbor, the sea turned choppy, the winds picked up, and the boat's motion intensified. We retreated from the sundeck to the cozy enclosed cabin as waves crashed over the sides, startling even a nervous dog into barks.
Approaching Lanai, we saw only turbulent waters, sheer cliffs, and arid terrain—an initially intimidating sight.
At Manele Harbor, welcoming locals directed us, and Lanai's convenient island shuttle whisked us toward Lanai City after our travels. Thrilled to relax, we rode in comfort.
Ascending, we traversed an extinct volcanic crater, evoking Montana's vast skies, lush pastures, and open expanses devoid of structures. Alone after the first stop, we chatted with our driver, a recent transplant from the Big Island. His surprise at Lanai's uniqueness hinted at the adventure ahead.
Lanai City resembles a quaint Pacific Northwest town—tiny, with just over 3,000 residents. Dole Square, the business hub, features towering Cook pines, a refreshing contrast to Hawaii's palms.
The cooler air surprised us: Were we still in Hawaii?

We checked into the charming Hotel Lanai, where our cottage—complete with a private yard and resident cat—felt like home.

A short two-minute walk took us to Pele's Other Garden for beer and dinner. No tourist crowds or bustling streets—just a foggy, idyllic hamlet. Sipping our drinks, we anticipated Lanai's upcoming adventures.
