Polaroid of the Week: Lush Mountains and Vibrant Charms of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
To be honest, I initially hesitated to spend my final days in Mexico in Puerto Vallarta. I preferred the smaller beach towns of San Pancho or Sayulita, north of the city, where I had celebrated my birthday. However, as the busy season approached, cafes in San Pancho had unreliable hours, and Sayulita lacked strong WiFi and decent accommodations. With pressing deadlines, I chose Puerto Vallarta for its abundant lodging options and reliable internet. As a digital nomad, sometimes work must come first, especially after a quiet November.
Soon after returning, I discovered Puerto Vallarta's true appeal beyond its resort reputation. While it features casinos, golf clubs, and cruise ships, the Old Town and Zona Romantica boast cobblestone streets, ornate churches, and vibrant pink bougainvillea against whitewashed colonial homes. Towering lush, jungle-covered mountains frame Bahía de Banderas, creating a dramatic backdrop. I cherished morning runs along the Malecón promenade, adorned with striking bronze sculptures, and hikes into hilly neighborhoods offering breathtaking city and bay views. The city offers diverse cafes, restaurants, gay bars (mostly men-focused), a microbrewery, and beachside dining on Playa de los Muertos.
Though Sayulita and San Pancho offered laid-back vibes and secluded beaches, I grew to love Puerto Vallarta's energy and boarded my flight eager to return someday.
