Polaroid of the Week: Daring Sea Lion Leaps onto Platform at Valdivia's Fish Market, Chile
Upon arriving in Valdivia, a charming city in Chile’s Lake District, we were instantly captivated. Dubbed the ‘hippest town in Southern Chile,’ it surpassed our expectations after seven weeks in Santiago. Before venturing to Patagonia’s tourist hotspots, we sought an authentic Chilean city experience and a taste of the famed Feria Fluvial fish market.
Valdivia’s riverside fish market lives up to its reputation. One side teems with fresh fish and seafood, while the other bursts with colorful fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and enormous seaweed bundles.
The real stars are the sea lions lounging in the river behind the market, snapping up fish scraps tossed in by vendors throughout the day. These massive animals sprawl on a wooden raft tethered five meters offshore—basking, playing, swimming, or feasting on fish in their idyllic routine.
One of the largest grew bold, leaping three meters from the water onto the cement platform, startling onlookers with its size. Market visitors whipped out smartphones, cameras, and even tablets to capture the spectacle as it flopped through the stalls. Unfazed fishmongers, ignoring its formidable fangs, lured it back by dumping a bucket of scraps into the water.
