September 2014 Travel Update: Life in Israel, Reflections, and Upcoming Adventures
These monthly updates share my current location, recent travels, what went well, what didn't, and a preview of what's ahead.
Life Lately
I departed New York at the start of September, arriving at the airport relaxed thanks to Blacklane.com's excellent chauffeur service—a worthwhile splurge before a long trans-Atlantic flight, far better than battling public transport with multiple bags and an overweight backpack. Yet, leaving the city I adore was heartbreaking; after an incredible summer that transformed me from a broken state in May, tears flowed all the way to the airport.
No time for melancholy followed, as I headed straight to Israel via a quick stop in Germany to visit my nephew and nieces. The thrill of a new country quickly took over. Three weeks in, I've been pleasantly surprised by how much I love Israel—especially its Middle Eastern cuisine, which I've always adored. Trekking the Israel National Trail was unforgettable amid the welcoming people. Doubts about skipping the Camino de Santiago vanished on day one in 100°F/37°C desert heat; the stunning scenery confirmed my choice.
Despite initial apprehensions, Israel has captivated me. However, the Gaza conflict, fresh from ending just before my arrival, cast a shadow—impossible to ignore during visits to the West Bank while seeking perspectives from both sides. I'll delve deeper in future Israel posts. Overall, I've gained better understanding; the country's beauty shines through road trips, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv stays, Dead Sea floats, ancient ports like Acco and Jaffa, Mediterranean beaches, and desert treks. Warm welcomes—from strangers, trekkers, a friend's family for Rosh Hashanah, West Bank locals, and new friends—made it exceptional. Can't wait to share more and plan a return.

What Went Well
Business growth! Hard work on this site has brought exciting offers and trip invitations. I selectively accept those aligning perfectly with me and readers, validating my solo efforts despite longer hours and less leisure reading or movies. A major project in discussion promises to make it all worthwhile (teaser below).
What Went Wrong
-Work-Travel Balance: Non-existent. Pre-Israel weeks meant 4 a.m. laptop sessions, minimal sleep, and zombie-like days amid heavy workloads and prior spending. Tight schedules overwhelmed me; emails piled up (apologies if unanswered—responses coming soon). Must slow down to avoid burnout.
-Travel Tech: Desert trek sand ruined two new lenses (bought at B&H in NYC); Israel repairs exceeded U.S. replacement costs. Embarrassingly, my iPod Touch fell in the toilet but survived rice-drying (and prior near-drownings) thanks to quick reflexes. After screen breaks on it and my iPhone, plus lenses, expensive gear seems cursed for me.
-Health: Hit with a severe stomach bug (projectile vomiting ensued). Solo travel illness is tough; grateful for Israeli friends' support with meds and company.
-Fitness: Four months of near-daily runs halted in Israel, leaving me off-balance. Running is my yoga; must integrate it into travel routines.
What's Next?
Oktoberfest! Opting out of overland Jordan extension (saving for later with more Israel exploration), I'll meet a New York friend in Munich. Five-time attendee after a five-year hiatus, we'll embrace Bavarian beer culture and dirndls (my first dress!). Expect fun photos.
Rest of the month: Awaiting confirmation for a spontaneous destination—fingers crossed for an on-site update. November/December plans surprised me but await tickets. Plus, a potential major on-camera project to a favorite country. Exciting times ahead!
