November 2015 Travel Recap: Life in New York, Fall Foliage Adventures, and What's Next
In my monthly round-ups, I reflect on the past four weeks of travels, highlighting what went well, what didn't, and my upcoming plans.
Where I've Been
I began the month in Germany, bidding farewell to my family before flying to New York. The rest of November was spent between Manhattan and Brooklyn, with short trips upstate—first for a fall foliage road trip and later for Thanksgiving.
What I've Been Up To
Returning to New York felt like coming home—a sentiment I echoed in my June recap upon my previous arrival. After years of constant travel, it's reassuring to have a place where I feel most at ease. I chose to postpone my Nepal trip to celebrate my birthday with loved ones here, and I'm thrilled with that decision.
Uncharacteristically warm November weather drew me outdoors. I discovered new spots like Coney Island Creek Beach, visited the Museum of Feelings, caught The Book of Mormon on Broadway, enjoyed a hip-hop concert, indulged in delicious eats (including homemade cakes—Christmas cookies next!), admired street art in Harlem, and revisited Williamsburg. I finally toured the Whitney Museum, captured Central Park's fall colors, ran nearly daily thanks to dry weather, and embarked on that memorable foliage road trip.
Highlights
Fall Foliage Road Trip
After weeks of planning, my Catskills getaway delivered perfect weather. Autumn has captured my heart: I hiked mountains, crossed the Hudson River, chased waterfalls, savored great food, witnessed stunning sunrises and sunsets, and photographed vibrant leaves endlessly.
Winning Flights to Singapore
At a New York Travel Massive meetup—a free gathering for travel enthusiasts worldwide (check availability in your city here)—Singapore Airlines sponsored and awarded me two round-trip tickets from New York to Singapore. An ideal early birthday gift!
Northern Lights from the Sky
En route to New York, the pilot announced clear views of the northern lights from the plane's right side. Seated by a window there, I watched the green lights dance—my second sighting after Iceland in September, equally magical.
Premier Housesits
I'm currently bird-sitting in a luxurious 38th-floor Midtown Manhattan apartment, soon moving to Brooklyn for another via TrustedHousesitters. Despite the membership cost, it pays off. For NYC housesitting tips, read my article Adventures in Housesitting in New York City; use my referral link for 20% off.
I even declined three holiday housesits due to prior commitments. Need NYC coverage over Christmas/New Year's? Let me know! 😉
First American Thanksgiving
After years in the U.S., I finally experienced traditional Thanksgiving with family—giant turkey and all. As a vegetarian, I skipped that but enjoyed an ice cream cake turkey for my birthday. The holiday's spirit of indulgence suited me perfectly!
Birthday Celebrations
Not big on birthdays, but this one spanned a week: a hip-hop show (Angel Haze), The Book of Mormon via ticket lottery (won VIP box seats for $32 vs. $189—better than TKTS; see lottery schedules), and the Museum of Feelings. My flexible lifestyle shone through, balancing work with sunny-day spontaneity.
Lowlights
Highway Breakdown in Germany
On my final day, driving from Berlin to Leipzig, my car failed on the autobahn. Terrified amid speeding traffic with a dying phone, I awaited the tow—not alone, thankfully. A minor hiccup before smooth sailing in New York.
What's New with Globetrottergirls
Amid the fun, I worked diligently: previewing Tel Aviv video footage, writing guides, editing photos, and preparing trip content.
What's Next
One more month in New York before warmer escapes. I'll embrace holiday magic: ice skating, Fifth Avenue windows, Christmas markets, baking cookies, festive dinners, and New Year's with friends. New York uniquely satisfies my wanderlust—until winter bites.
