October 2014 Travel Recap: Life Updates, Recent Trips, and What's Ahead
These monthly updates share my current location, recent travels, successes and challenges, plus a preview of upcoming adventures.
Life Lately
If you've seen my latest Polaroid of the Week, you know I'm back in New York City. I didn't expect to return so soon after leaving last month, but I couldn't pass up Halloween (I was here for it last year too), the New York City Marathon (I entered the lottery in March but wasn't selected—still excited to run my favorite routes and cheer on participants), and exploring spots I missed this summer. I've also been savoring NYC's food scene, discovering new coffee shops and bars, and enjoying the stunning fall foliage.
I'm here for a brief three-week visit between trips, invited to experience Norwegian Air's transatlantic service on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. As the only low-cost carrier offering bargain transatlantic fares (like Los Angeles to Copenhagen for $196), it's an opportunity I couldn't resist. I'll share a full review after my return flight to Europe.
The past month took me to Israel, a too-short stay with family in Germany, quick trips to Berlin and Munich for Oktoberfest—the month's highlight so far. I'm looking forward to an epic Halloween party. Catching up with NYC friends, a 'leaf peeping' road trip upstate, and time with my nieces and nephew have been highlights too.
What Went Well
Work-travel balance: It's improved significantly from last month. Though challenging during my busy Germany schedule, I've focused on work in NYC, resisted distractions, resumed workouts, prioritized sleep, and planned an extended Christmas break in Germany to recharge after a demanding year.
What Went Wrong
Tech troubles struck again: My iPhone died despite a new battery in August. I'm not lucky with gadgets and am deciding on a reliable used replacement—no iPhone 6 for me. I also lost my debit card (the one for cash withdrawals, replaced months ago). Thankfully, it was in cashless-friendly NYC. I forgot to mention losing my wallet in Israel ($50 cash, no cards) and misplacing another debit card—clearly, I need better handling of gadgets and cards.
What's Next?
Exciting plans: Heading to Sri Lanka soon for TBC Asia, the first travel bloggers conference in Asia, organized by the Professional Travel Bloggers Association (PTBA), Cinnamon Hotels, and SriLankan Airlines. After the Social Travel Summit in Leipzig, I'm eager for its workshops, speakers, and networking—vital for professional nomad bloggers like me.
Founded in 2011, the PTBA connects bloggers with PRs, offers support, and this conference underscores its value. I'll explore Sri Lanka for nearly five weeks post-conference, hoping for a Maldives detour (just 90 minutes away, flights from $150)—a dream destination!
Happy Halloween!
