Butchart Gardens: Canada's Iconic National Historic Site of Timeless Floral Splendor
Far more than a stunning floral display, Butchart Gardens is a designated national historic site and a masterpiece of early 20th-century horticulture. Its meticulously maintained blooms, elegant fountains, and gardens drawing from Japanese, Italian, and other global influences transform what was once a depleted limestone quarry. Vast and rolling, the gardens easily accommodate the summer crowds from tour buses.
Food outlets and gift shops line the entrance, including the acclaimed Dining Room Restaurant, renowned for its exceptional afternoon tea.
Open year-round, the gardens peak in summer—the busiest yet most vibrant season—with Saturday-night fireworks in July and August. The Christmas lights display from early December to early January offers another magical highlight.
Visioned by Jennie Butchart, wife of the quarry founder, the transformation began in 1912. Over a century of dedicated care has cultivated more than one million blooms for one million annual visitors. Still owned by the Butchart family, it preserves a remarkable legacy.
