Broad Street Cemetery: Salem’s Historic Burial Ground
About
Broad Street Cemetery, a historic burial ground in Salem, houses the graves of notable figures from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Among them are George Corwin, who served as High Sheriff of Essex County in 1692, and Jonathan Corwin, a prominent Salem merchant who presided over the infamous witch trials as a magistrate from the “Witch House.” A white obelisk marks their shared resting place.
The cemetery remains open to the public from dawn until dusk. Visitors are encouraged to honor the graves with respect and to appreciate the site’s historical significance and solemn atmosphere.
