Discover the Untouched Charms of Fort Myers & Sanibel Beaches: A Unique Florida Escape

Millions of Americans are flocking to Florida for domestic beach getaways this year, but not all Sunshine State destinations offer the same experience. Nestled in Southwest Florida, The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel stand out with abundant manatees and mangroves rather than luxury mansions. Here, sand dollars and seashells are treasures for beachcombers, and "island time" prevails on both outer islands and the mainland.

We invited renowned travel content creator Leah Shoup (@LeahShoup), with her extensive Florida experience, to explore this gem with her mother Becky over four sunny days. Dive into her top discoveries and stunning photos below, and start planning your own trip.

"This was not the Florida I knew."

As an Atlanta native who's visited Florida dozens of times, Leah found The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel refreshingly different from typical spots.

"It was so low-key and relaxed," she shared. Beaches lack high-rise resorts, offering ample space even in peak season. "I loved the authentic small beach town vibe."

During their sun-filled stay, they kayaked in Lovers Key State Park, dined outdoors, relaxed on pristine Cayo Costa State Park beaches, browsed Fort Myers River District boutiques, and admired Sanibel Island's lighthouse.

A highlight was Matlacha (pronounced Mat-LA-SHAY), a colorful village on a spit between the mainland and Pine Island. "One vibrant main street brims with art galleries and cafés," Leah described.

They stayed in a charming tiny home at Matlacha Tiny Village. "Adorable and ideal for friends or family reunions," she said. "Walk to galleries, lunch spots, and ice cream."

Indulging in local Queenie's ice cream (try salted caramel), they explored galleries like Leoma Lovegrove. "Pops of color everywhere," Leah noted.

"Perfect for travelers of all ages."

Leah, who travels with her mother from Canada to the Caribbean, cherished their bonding here. "Ideal for beach lovers, history buffs, nature enthusiasts, and animal fans," she said.

Becky appreciated accessible spots like Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, with its flat, shaded boardwalk. "Hours of birdwatching amid cypress trees," Leah added.

Just a 90-minute direct flight from Atlanta to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), with 51 nonstops including new routes from Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Kansas City. "Like a Caribbean escape without the long flight or passport," Leah raved.

"World-class beaches await."

Beach time dominated: sunsets at Fort Myers Beach, shelling on Sanibel, and Cayo Costa State Park, a boat-only barrier island.

Via Tropic Star Cruises water taxi from Pine Island, they packed Publix sandwiches. "Crew handles gear; a truck shuttles to the beach," Leah explained. "Feels like a private deserted island—relaxing and shell-packed."

"Prime shelling spot; wear water shoes for the shell jetties," she advised. Boating reveals outer islands like Cabbage Key. Their captain spotted manatees en route.

"Beyond beaches: Endless adventures."

Staying at Luminary Hotel & Co. overlooking the Caloosahatchee River, they toured Fort Myers River District. Book True Tours for history or themed walks. Catch Friday Art or Music Walks.

At Rosy Tomorrows Heritage Farm, they toured animals pre-dinner. "Unexpected farm fun in Florida," Leah said.

"Wildlife encounters thrill."

At Pink Shell Resort, they kayaked Lovers Key State Park with Lovers Key Adventures. Guide Steven's group spotted dolphins, manatees, tarpon, and an alligator. "Listen for bubbles," Leah advised.

  • Exploring Baffin Island: Arctic Extremes and Spectacular Cliffs

Baffin Island is an area that defines extremes. Earth’s fifth biggest island lies well within the Arctic Circle, ensuring it experiences 24-hour daylight over the summer, but suffers complete darkness during the winter months. It’s not unusual for temperatures to drop to -30°C, and that frigid cold is exacerbated by gale force winds and the consequent wind chill. The largest sea cliffs on Earth rise up out of the North East fiords for nearly two kilometres. Scientists have found rock on Baff

Afghanistan is a place that conjures a multitude of images – mujahideen warriors, the Silk Road, stone Buddhas and exquisitely blue tiled mosques, and maybe even pomegranates. Unfortunately now, the Taliban, poverty and violence are indelibly etched on our perceptions of the country too. It is a corner of the world I have been fortunate to visit many times over the last six years; exploring on foot and on snowshoes, by horseback, motorcycle, bicycle, and in the back of an endless array of ubi

  • Wild Connections: An Intense Kayaking Survival Story

I coerced my hand out of my pogie with great care, as if I were disentangling a gnarled vine from a tree limb. I almost chuckled as I did so – not because it was particularly funny, but because the effort required for that one simple action, an action that was as natural to me as walking, was completely out of proportion to the task. I was spent. After wresting my hands free, I fumbled for the GoPro strapped to the deck of my kayak and waged the daily war to detach it from its mount. The ca
