Master Sailing in Key West: Essential Guide to Wind-Powered Adventures and Snorkeling
Key West, Florida
Slicing through emerald waters under the sun, we speed into the back-country with full sails and wide smiles. Dolphins play off the port bow. It’s a perfect day in the Florida Keys.
There’s something truly magical about cruising the ocean powered solely by the wind. The silence elevates this ancient mode of transportation—no engine noise, no exhaust fumes.
Just the creak of wood and the flap of canvas.
You and the wind, free to roam in any direction. Embarking on a sailboat is among the top experiences in Key West.
Sailing in Key West
After driving down from Miami with Stephanie Be and her friend Lauren, our road trip to Key West promised excitement. Our goals in the Conch Republic? Indulge in key lime pie, sip margaritas, and master the basics of sailing.
Captain Seth and Captain Kala from Sunset Sail Key West welcomed us aboard their 33-foot green-hulled Glander Sloop, “High Tide”—a sturdy vessel ideal for shallow waters.
The boat was provisioned with fresh fruit, hummus, and chilled Cayman Jack Margaritas to power our adventure.
Wind-Powered Navigation
Over our 13-mile voyage, Seth and Kala demystified sailing mechanics—traveling at angles to the wind, always slightly off your direct path.
The art of tacking involves zig-zagging toward your destination, swiftly flipping the sail without the boom swinging dangerously across the deck.
Engage all five senses for optimal efficiency: listen for fluttering sails, watch water ripples for gusts, feel the wind on your ear.
Snorkeling with Spiny Lobsters
A steady 10-15 knot breeze propelled us over nutrient-rich, emerald waters. We navigated a shallow reef section, threading precisely between buoys in a narrow channel.
Misjudge it, and you’d risk running aground—far trickier without a motor on a sailboat.
Safely through, we anchored and plunged into the warm, bathtub-like waters for snorkeling amid live sponges, prime habitat for Florida Keys spiny lobsters.
Key Lime Pie Indulgence
Sailing back to port, we savored cool, hand-crafted Cayman Jack margaritas under the sun, toasting our successful outing.
But hunger soon called.
Key West’s famed key lime pie was the perfect remedy. At Key Lime Pie Co., we devoured slices that paired ideally with our organic key lime margaritas.
In Key West, there’s no such thing as too much key lime. ⭐
