Intergalactic Freak Show
The 2015 theme, All Hallows InterGalactic Freak Show, drew 60,000 revelers from across the U.S. with outrageous costumes (or none at all).
Participants spend months crafting outfits for themed parties. I joined in with three: Greek God, Dirty Pirate, and a full-body-painted Intergalactic Alien.
One night at Irish Kevin’s 80’s party, a Jimmy Buffett impersonator rocked the stage as we danced wildly. Just another magical Fantasy Fest evening.
Fantasy Fest Events
Highlights include The Coronation Ball, where the Conch King and Queen—top AIDS Help fundraisers—are crowned. In 2007, they raised over $200,000; since 1989, nearly $2.6 million total.
Goombay, a two-day Bahama Village street party, celebrates Bahamian heritage with goatskin drums, food, art, and dance.
Other favorites: Zombie Bike Ride, Pet Masquerade, Anything But Clothes Party, Rum Barrel Pirate Bash, Airbrush Expo, Sloppy Joe’s Toga Party, and more. Check the Fantasy Fest website for full schedules.
The finale is the mile-long Fantasy Fest Parade down Duval Street from Atlantic to Gulf.
Fantasy Fest Tips & Advice
This extended adult costume party occurs late October, not always on Halloween (it did in 2015). Nudity appears, but it's inclusive for all ages, races, body types, and orientations—a judgment-free zone.
With limited taxis for 60,000 visitors, rent a bike (moderation advised with drinks).
Body paint is essential—airbrush artists charge $100–$800+. Cure hangovers at Blue Heaven or Cuban Coffee Queen.
Getting There
Drive 160 miles south from Miami on US-1 for a stunning Keys bridge journey flanked by ocean and gulf. Or take a 45-minute flight from Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.
