How My West Virginia Roots Ignited a Passion for Shopping Small and Supporting Local Makers
Megan Ursic, Founder of The Handcrafted Cooperative
West Virginia native Megan Ursic founded The Handcrafted Cooperative, a seasonal outdoor market in Morgantown showcasing handmade items from local makers and small businesses. This initiative enables artisans to connect directly with customers and their community without the overhead of a storefront, boosting the local economy while preserving West Virginia's unique character.
As a child in West Virginia, shopping options were limited. My grandmother sewed my first school formal dress, my mother prepared homemade meals nightly, and I crafted my own jewelry. I fondly recall trips down High Street to Bead Monster (now Silver Pennies Jewelry) for bracelet supplies. Like many West Virginians, we relied on personal talents and local shops to enrich our lives.
How Big Box Stores Shaped—and Then Shifted—My Spending Habits
In my 20s, big box retailers like Target arrived in Morgantown. I frequented them weekly, enjoying Starbucks coffee alongside clothing, décor, and accessories. As options expanded, most of my budget went to mass-produced goods. It wasn't until starting my own handmade business in my late 20s that I recognized this drift from my roots—and realized it undermined the small businesses that define our community.
Before Buying, Ask Yourself These 4 Key Questions
I haven't eliminated chains entirely—they're convenient and affordable for everyday needs. Instead, I've struck a balance. You can too, with these questions:
Do I know a local maker or small business offering something similar?
I've long desired handmade ceramic dinnerware. I'm gradually building a collection from East Wheeling Clay Works. Family and guests savor meals on plates crafted with the same care as our food.
Does this support my local community?
I switched from Starbucks after Quantum Bean Coffee opened in 2017. Supporting owners Sam and Susan Bonasso with weekly bean purchases fills me with pride—every cold brew makes a real community impact.
Does this bring joy to me or others?
This guides art and décor choices. A watercolor by Octavia Spriggs, inspired by Dolly Sods, sparks stories and memories for guests, evoking shared hikes and happiness.
Can I make it myself?
As a DIY enthusiast, I love new skills. Join local workshops, learn from friends, or use online classes. There's unmatched pride in saying, "I made this!"
West Virginia's Community is Embracing Small Businesses
Since launching The Handcrafted Cooperative in 2017, I've witnessed Morgantown's shift toward valuing handmade and small-batch items from U.S. makers. Our customers appreciate our craft and champion our success amid endless options.
