Budget Surf Trip Guide: East Coast Australia from Sydney to Brisbane
Discover essential budget tips, accommodation recommendations, and top surf spots for an unforgettable journey along Australia's East Coast from Sydney to Brisbane.
Sydney
Arriving in Sydney marked the exciting start of our East Coast surf adventure. Near our hostel in Glebe Village, we discovered AB Hotel, offering $8 AUD jugs of quality beer—a steal by Australian standards where a six-pack of good beer can cost $80.
Australia's high alcohol prices stem from heavy government taxes funding socialized healthcare, covering hospital bills with minimal out-of-pocket costs for patients.

Glebe Village Backpackers Hostel
For $24 AUD per person, Glebe Village Backpackers offered good value with delicious morning pancakes and free Friday night BBQs (including bread, hot dogs, and burgers). Note the lack of lockers or safes in shared rooms.
Helpful German travelers shared city and bus tips. Unsure of plans, we took a bus downtown. The enthusiastic driver helped craft our itinerary: Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, free Royal Botanic Gardens (teeming with seasonal flying foxes), and Bondi Beach.

Navigating Sydney's left-side driving was challenging—blinkers and wipers are swapped. Tolls require online payment within 48 hours via each operator's site, or face fines; our rental added $50 per toll.
Newcastle
Heading north for warmer water sans wetsuits, the 2.5-hour drive led to Redhead Beach Holiday Park ($40 AUD/night during Easter peak). Australian 'camping' features powered sites, camp kitchens, pools, and laundry—far from roughing it.

Trails access beach and dunes; locals praise nearby surf. Stunning night skies made for epic photos.
Next morning, Kuta Lines Surf Shop sold us two used boards for $200 AUD each—perfect short-term beaters.

Merewether
Ten minutes north, Merewether Baths offered photo ops amid head-high, fast-breaking waves—expert territory only. En route north, Salty Dog served fresh fish & chips and a standout steak sandwich.

Crescent Head
Four hours later, Crescent Head Holiday Park impressed with quality waves, affordable healthy café food, and internet access. Beach and point breaks tempted, but warmer waters called northward.
Yamba and Angourie
Yamba's 'sleepy' vibe means early closures, but fresh seafood and a $6 ferry to Iluka Nature Reserve shine (last return 4 PM). Caravan parks: Blue Dolphin (river/marina), Calypso (lighthouse/beach/ferry, tight sites), Yamba Waters (quiet, spacious, budget-friendly at $25 AUD—watch for mosquitoes).
Bi-Lo provided cheap groceries. Five minutes away: Angourie Nature Reserve's acclaimed right-hand point break and beachbreak, plus green/blue swimming pools (brown post-rain) with cliff jumps.

Two epic surf days here before continuing.
Broken Head
Seven km south of Byron Bay, Broken Head Holiday Park offers stunning views, a fast right-hand surf break (S-SW swells), and a 1.6 km rainforest trail to cliffs, Kings Beach, and Two Sisters Rocks.

DIY mosquito netting (dish rags and tape) combated bites. Neighbors shared insights: 'mud flies' bite fiercely; assume all unknowns bite in Oz. Other tips: city pronunciations (Cairns='cans'), no tipping (servers earn $17-23/hr), $15+/hr wages.

Byron Bay
No swell at Broken Head prompted a Byron check: small, crowded point break by lighthouse, but crystal blue-green water and party waves were fun amid longboards.

Backpacker haven; try Eagle Pizza for deals. Skipped crowded Gold Coast high-rises, stopping at Palm Beach. Traffic detoured us to eerie Beerwah caravan park near Glass House Mountains.
Australia Zoo
Near Beerwah, the zoo exceeded expectations: thrilling Irwin crocodile show, happy animals in spacious habitats, cheetah petting, kangaroo feeding in Roo Heaven. Five hours flew by.

Maroochydore, Australia
Sunshine Coast had warm water but flat surf. Sea Breeze Caravan Park was beachfront bliss, but Noosa Heads felt too posh. Redirected to Cabarita.
Cabarita
Tweed Coast gem with protected wetlands preserving its vibe. North Star Holiday Resort had all amenities. 'White Jade' in Pottsville served unique garlic prawn pizza.
Hastings Point: uncrowded north/south peaks. Rainy day in camp kitchen; sunset sessions followed. Final Broken Head night: chest-high waves. Sold boards, returned van in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley.
Brisbane: street mall specials at Ric’s Cafe ($8 fish/chips/steak platter). Slept at airport pre-dawn flight.
