Chattanooga Solar Eclipse 2017: Top Viewing Parties and Essential Safety Tips
On August 21, 2017, the first total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. in nearly 100 years passed near Chattanooga. With schools and businesses closed, locals celebrated this rare cosmic event. Equip yourself with certified eclipse glasses and explore the best viewing spots around town.
What to Do:
For an unparalleled vantage point, head to the summit of Lookout Mountain for Rock City’s ROCK The Eclipse viewing party. Local meteorologist David Karnes, alongside J-103, hosted on-site excitement with stellar prizes.
The Chattanooga Zoo teamed up with Sunny 92.3 for a unique viewing event amid your favorite animals. It offered a rare chance to observe reactions to the eclipse, including nocturnal species emerging in the temporary darkness. Kids enjoyed free admission by bringing their own glasses.
Another thrilling option was the Tennessee Valley Railroad’s Copperhill Solar Special train excursion. The ride wound through the river gorge, spiraled near Farner, and stopped in the historic mining town of Copperhill. An extended layover provided ideal time for a picnic and eclipse viewing. The Creative Discovery Museum offered eclipse-themed activities for all ages from August 19-21, featuring hands-on science demos on eclipses and shadows.
