Galapagos Islands Packing List: Essentials from a Recent Traveler's Cruise Adventure

The Galapagos Islands offer diverse landscapes, unique wildlife, crystal-clear waters, and unparalleled adventure opportunities. My recent week-long island-hopping cruise with Andando Tours far exceeded expectations, creating memories of a lifetime.

Packing for this ecologically sensitive destination requires thoughtful preparation for comfort and minimal environmental impact. This expert packing list, drawn from firsthand experience, covers clothing, gear, and essentials for your Galapagos trip.

Toiletries

Pack your everyday toiletries, but remove excess packaging to reduce waste—vital in the Galapagos. For frequent swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving, include reef-safe shampoo and leave-in conditioner to detangle saltwater-soaked hair.

Sun Protection

On the equator, sun exposure is intense. Bring ample reef-safe sunscreen and reapply often. A wide-brim sun hat and baseball cap provide essential shade on windy days.

Water Gear

For extensive water time, pack a long-sleeved rash guard and shortie wetsuit (confirm if your cruise provides them; mine offered only full wetsuits). Include water shoes for wet landings, a dry bag for dinghy rides, 2-3 swimsuits, a quick-dry towel, and a kaftan or sarong as a cover-up.

Medication

With constant boat travel, pack seasickness remedies and activated charcoal for potential stomach issues.

Active Wear & Layers

Expect lots of outdoor activity, so bring 2-3 pairs of leggings, moisture-wicking tank tops, and t-shirts for mobility. Though rarely cold, the dry season (June-November) is cooler—pack a light sweater. For the wet season (December-May), include a raincoat.

Hiking Gear

Hiking is central to exploring the islands. Choose lightweight, waterproof hiking shoes and moisture-wicking socks for comfort on trails.

Camera Gear

Capture the islands' stunning wildlife and landscapes with reliable gear. I used a GoPro Hero 7 Black with a waterproof floating handle for underwater shots, plus extra SD cards and a portable power bank. For a complete travel photography packing list, check out this post.

Miscellaneous

Minimize waste with a reusable water bottle, refilled before daily excursions. Binoculars are invaluable for birdwatching.
