33 Profound Life Lessons: Reflections on Resilience After a Business Setback

Today marks my 33rd birthday, the first time I've felt inspired to share these reflections publicly. After retreating for two weeks following a major disappointment, I've reached a place of calm and positivity.

A valuable lesson learned.

Sharing this on my birthday feels fitting—a day for introspection.

On Friday the 13th, we drove to Los Angeles to collect our 'finished' surf bikinis from Lemi's Studio, our contracted manufacturer for the first production run. Upon inspection, my worst fears materialized: the bikinis were poorly made and irreparable.

I had taken every precaution—detailed instructions, pinned notes, and reminder emails urging attention to details. The owner assured me, 'No worries.' In hindsight, he should have advised daily check-ins or an on-site visit to safeguard our investment.

They disregarded all specifications, wasting our materials. The next day, the owner claimed smaller orders couldn't match sample quality (yes, it was shocking). Despite requests to rework them, communication ceased after securing our deposit. With no recourse, we refunded all pre-orders, absorbing a significant financial hit to honor our customers.

Today, I've accepted the loss and see the silver lining: more time for our blog and travels, our true passion.

33 Profound Life Lessons: Reflections on Resilience After a Business Setback

The future of our swimwear line is uncertain—we may partner with an experienced seamstress, learn sewing ourselves, or even expand thoughtfully.

But that's not the main point.

I believe everything happens for a reason. This experience reinforced timeless lessons and taught new ones:

1. Life continues despite hardships. Focus on the present, not the past.

2. 'Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.' —Buddha

3. Attachment immobilizes; true freedom comes from letting go.

4. Bad things happen to good people.

5. Time heals all wounds, no matter how deep they feel now.

6. Simple things hold the greatest beauty—this ordeal reminded us to cherish them.

7. Dreams involve obstacles and detours; persistence is key.

8. Health is paramount. This setback prompted a shift to a mostly raw, plant-based diet with minimal processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol—leaving us feeling revitalized.

9. 'The only way we can live is if we grow. The only way we can grow is if we change... Throw yourself.' —C. JoyBell C.

10. Gratitude for obstacles—they build your strength.

11. 'When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in.' —Haruki Murakami

12. Happiness is navigating problems, not avoiding them.

13. Cherish the wonderful people in your life, like our supportive customers who sent kind messages despite never meeting.

And finally:

14. Always pay deposits with a credit card for protection—a lesson reinforced from past experiences.

Binding her chest with strips of linen—and suiting up in loose trousers and a tunic—a French housekeeper named Jeanne Baret prepared to board a naval ship. Her lover, the naturalist Philibert de Commerson, had been invited to join the 1766 expedition of Commander Louis Antoine de Bougainville, and Baret—a keen botanist herself—wasn’t about to be left behind.
