Overcoming Claustrophobia: A First-Hand Guide to Safe Caving Adventures
As someone with claustrophobia, I've long avoided tight spaces. My limited caving experience includes a short, equipment-challenged tour in Laos and snorkeling in Riviera Maya caves, which surprisingly didn't trigger my fear.
Recently, I explored Rio Secreto in Riviera Maya—a stunning underground river system. Despite initial apprehension, I completed the tour without panic and would return. This natural wonder is worth pushing past discomfort, especially in a safe, guided environment. My rational mind prevailed, though taming my imagination 90 feet underground was challenging.
If claustrophobia holds you back from caving, these proven tips from my experience will help you enjoy this phenomenal adventure.
Always Go with a Guide
For beginners, never explore caves unguided—it's essential common sense. A knowledgeable guide provides security, especially for those prone to claustrophobia. At Rio Secreto, our expert guide, with hundreds of tours under their belt, shared reassuring insights that calmed my nerves.
Ask Questions Beforehand
Fear often stems from unknowns, like feeling trapped with only one entry and exit. Learning about multiple access points in advance greatly eased my mind and reduced anxiety with every step.
Push Scary Thoughts Aside
Thoughts of being deep underground spiked my heart rate. When our guide mentioned our 90-foot depth, I countered by visualizing us near the surface. This mental reframing helped control anxiety. The mind is powerful—positive self-talk can rewire fearful responses.
Focus on Breathing
Deep, intentional breathing was my greatest tool, enhanced by mantras like 'It's going to be okay.' This simple technique allowed me to relax, appreciate the cave's beauty, and fully immerse in the experience.

While scuba caving may be a future goal, I'm content with walking, swimming, and snorkeling these wonders for now.
Trip Tips: Base yourself in Playa del Carmen for easy access to Riviera Maya's caves and cenotes. Tulum offers beach stays, but note limited electricity at some rustic hotels.
