Witnessing Orcas Hunt Gray Whales and Dolphins: Our Unforgettable Whale-Watching Adventure (Part II)

This is Part II of Orcas Versus Gray Whales: Our Once-In-A-Lifetime Whale-Watching Experience

After our captain cut the boat's engine, we waited anxiously, eyes scanning the horizon for what we feared might unfold next. We'd just spotted the orcas playfully surfacing nearby.

Suddenly, the captain's voice crackled over the loudspeaker: "It's surprising these dolphins are lingering— they usually flee at the first sign of a predator. These orcas are masters at staying hidden."

Five tense minutes later, a massive splash erupted. The boat erupted in gasps as the captain narrated: "They may have nabbed one. An orca breached fully, launching the dolphin into the air. A solid hit like that can stun or injure it, slowing it down for the kill."

In a flash, the dolphins bolted, skimming the surface at breakneck speed to escape.

To our left, the three orcas' fins sliced through the water, circling purposefully. One launched skyward, revealing its magnificent form.

"Are there four?" a passenger whispered. "No—that's the dolphin!"

An Island Packers crew member provided live commentary: "They've got one dolphin in their sights, heading straight for our bow. But... they're easing off the chase."

The four mammals approached, but the orcas lost interest, releasing the stunned dolphin and resuming their playful antics around our boat.

As sunset painted the sky, the crew turned us toward Channel Islands Harbor. A twinge of sadness hit as we bid farewell to our ocean companions.

On the short ride back, dolphins rejoined us, frolicking in our wake, while the three gray whales trailed peacefully in the distance.

It was a triumphant close to an epic day we'll cherish forever.

Chattanooga has transformed far beyond its reputation as Americas dirtiest city. Today, one type of smoke graces our horizon with open arms: the hickory-scented plume from local barbecue pits. Chattanooga BBQ offers a diverse array of styles, blending influences into a true melting pot of flavors. Locals favor coleslaw atop pulled pork sandwiches, with sauces that merge Kansas Citys sweet, thick profile and Piedmonts tangy kick—often enhanced with Tennessee whiskey. Yet the Scenic Citys BBQ sce

  • Beyond: A Scottish Wilderness Adventure

We are looking for the beyond. Beyond the city limits and beyond the Trossachs. Beyond the great Rannoch Moor and beyond the mountains. Beyond the rock of the mainland and the trivia of everyday life. The plan was simple: walk, see, learn, eat, sleep, look, listen and laugh. We’d spend a weekend hiking, eating well, camping out. We’d also heard about a bothy called the Lookout along the northern cliffs of the island. We heard it’s the most spectacular location of any bothy in Scotland; quit
