Surrounded by Humpback Whales: An Unforgettable Encounter in Alaska's Stephens Passage

“Good evening, Adventurers. We just noticed some whale action on the starboard side of the boat. A humpback calf is breaching and seems to be pretty active.”

Our first whale sighting! A young, playful humpback calf graced us during the second night of our UnCruise adventure in Alaska.

Scott and I seem to have exceptional luck with whale encounters. Throughout the week, we spotted more humpbacks sporadically, plus two transient orcas that approached our boat closely in Port Houghton.

Surrounded by Humpbacks

The real spectacle unfolded on Thursday evening as we cruised through Stephens Passage en route to Dawes Glacier.

Our experienced captain and crew remarked they'd never witnessed anything like it. Just before sunset, our vessel was encircled by 50 to 100 humpback whales—feeding at the surface, tail slapping, breaching, and displaying their flukes before deep dives.

Whales were visible in every direction. Some glided close alongside, mouths agape, revealing their baleen plates clearly.

These are the moments that define travel adventures.

  • Witnessing Orcas Off the Scottish Coast: A Memorable 24‑Hour Ferry Journey

An enormous orca leaps clean into the air and plunges back down, splashing into the ocean. It’s a welcome that Jim and I won’t forget as we step out onto the viewing deck for some fresh air while our ferry steams through the Minch. Utilising the royal flush of transport to get here (car, train, bus, and ferry), this journey may have taken an entire 24 hours, but we have certainly reached one of the extremities of the United Kingdom. The whale gives us another flyby before presumably returni

  • Reconnecting: A Solo Trail Run Through Snow-Covered Peaks

Snow falls from a stark white sky as we wordlessly pick our way through gullies, scrambling over boulders and crags towards the saddle between two peaks. After an hour of hard climbing, we stand for a moment at the top before picking the pace back up and heading north over grassy fells and bog. We settle into a rhythm, and enjoy a perfect trail run alone in our thoughts as we zip across the ancient terrain. The memories and stress of the year fall behind us with every step as we soak up the

For many years we have enjoyed exploring remote regions of the world, mainly by bike. After several adventures exploring high altitude regions, we became interested in a winter bike trip. We quickly fell upon the heart of Siberia: Lake Baikal. It is well-known for outstanding natural beauty and for its surrounding high mountain ranges. Consequently, the region offering amazing scenery. The lake completely freezes over in winter and the locals use its surface as a winter road. This seemed idea
