Hotels vs. Vacation Rentals: Which is Best for Your Trip?
We've enjoyed renting houses and apartments on past trips, like our weekend in Big Bear and our Baja adventure, and I've shared positive experiences from those stays.
That said, vacation rentals shine for extended stays or large groups. However, they're not always ideal for short trips with tight schedules or when you prefer hassle-free convenience.

We recently attended a conference in Toronto and rented a harborfront apartment, envisioning a local-like experience with personal space away from the event.
Instead, we encountered the city's realities in ways we hadn't anticipated.
Arriving Friday night after a grueling transcontinental journey and multiple airport transfers, we just wanted to drop our bags, shower, eat, and rest.
Following the owner's instructions, we requested the key from the security guard.
He looked puzzled.
“Your name isn't on the list, so I can't release the key,” he said.
I presented emails from the owner, including key pickup details.
“She was here today but didn't mention guests,” he replied.
The guard called management, who required owner confirmation for access. Unfortunately, she was airborne and unreachable.
After 30 minutes of limbo, they stored our bags while we grabbed dinner and drinks. Avoiding international roaming costs without a local SIM, we waited anxiously for two hours.
Returning around 11 p.m., we finally gained entry—but wished we'd chosen a hotel.

The weekend continued with issues: the hot water heater failed Sunday, leaving us with cold showers.
Hotels minimize such risks and offer maid service, room service, and amenities that simplify travel. Why handle chores like dishes or laundry on vacation?
We travel to unwind, not replicate home tasks.

At the Four Seasons in Lana’i, needs were anticipated—complimentary sunscreen by the pool, toothpaste delivered on request.
Premium rentals can match this: our family's Puerto Vallarta villa offered daily maid service, a cook, and 24/7 maintenance—hotel luxury with home privacy.

Not all rentals falter, and travel surprises happen. Yet for certain trips, hotels provide unmatched reliability.
