Although this summer's Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is moving online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers are preserving the cherished tradition of a collectible poster.

This striking 24" x 36" poster, sponsored by Penn State Health, was crafted by acclaimed designer Lanny Sommese and his daughter Saige. In a thoughtful nod to the unique circumstances, familiar icons like the Festival jester and nods to art, music, and theater are omitted. A radiant sunrise over a stylized Happy Valley landscape instead symbolizes hope and optimism for brighter days ahead.

“As we grappled with canceling the in-person event, we prioritized upholding the poster tradition,” said Festival Executive Director Rick Bryant. “Shifting from downtown State College and Penn State campus imagery, the design proclaims 'happening wherever you are.'”

The poster is free while supplies last. Pick it up at these local spots:

  • Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts
403 S. Allen Street, Suite 205A, State College
  • Downtown State College Improvement District
127 S. Fraser Street, State College
  • State College Framing Company and Gallery
160 Rolling Ridge Drive, State College
  • The Makery
209 W. Calder Way, State College
  • Art a la Carte
    107 S. Allegheny Street, Bellefonte
  • The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau
800 East Park Avenue, State College
  • Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau
    One West Market Street, Lewistown

After July 12, remaining posters will be available for purchase on the Festival’s website.

Lanny Sommese, Emeritus Professor of Graphic Design at Penn State, has designed the Festival's vibrant posters for over 40 years; the full collection is showcased at Penn State’s HUB-Robeson Center. Saige Sommese, a 2018 Penn State graphic design graduate, leads her own design firm.

The Festival is supported by grants from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau and Centre County Commissioners, plus state arts funding via the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania) and the National Endowment for the Arts.
