Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts: State College's Iconic Summer Tradition
Since 1967, the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts has been a cherished summer highlight in State College. The inaugural nine-day event showcased music, theater, dance, puppet shows, educational TV programs, and even a ribbon-cutting by then-Governor Raymond Shafer—an unprecedented spectacle for Central Pennsylvania. The community responded with overwhelming enthusiasm, giving birth to Happy Valley's annual tradition.
Today, this five-day celebration overflows with art, music, children's activities, delectable food, and chances to reconnect with friends and neighbors.
Beyond the artists, the Festival features over 50 performances across outdoor and indoor stages. From Central Pennsylvania's vibrant local music scene to touring talent, catching a show at the Allen Street stage is a quintessential experience.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the live Festival to a virtual format. Audiences rallied to support artists, performers, and vendors facing sudden livelihood threats, creating a unique online gathering.
For 2021, the Festival goes virtual again July 8-11, as social distancing and the event's lively spirit aren't compatible. Tune into arts-festival.com for exceptional shopping, live-streamed shows, family activities, and more.
We're optimistic about presenting the Festival's younger sibling, First Night State College, on December 31. With ice sculptures, performances in churches and public spaces, giant puppet processions, a 5K run, resolution sculptures, and family fun, it's the ideal way to close out the year and embrace brighter days ahead.
