Owner Pat Romano launched the hotel's booking system in mid-February 2021, securing reservations for local events and Penn State activities. However, cancellations surged by March as the pandemic unfolded.

Since then, Romano and his team have adapted to evolving mandates, implementing rigorous protocols to protect staff and patrons alike.

New Plastic Table Coverings

The Lobby Grille uses disposable plastic table coverings, removed and replaced with a pre-sanitized one after each guest departs.

“We don’t even sanitize at the table,” Romano explains. “We simply remove the cover, sanitize it in the back, and install a fresh, sanitized one.”

Staff conduct enhanced sanitization, averaging $200 weekly on masks, gloves, sanitizers, and cleaners—costs that have risen sharply since March 2020. Routine temperature checks and consistent use of PPE remain standard.

“We will continue to make sure our staff is checked routinely for temperature and, as always, using hand sanitizer, gloves, and masks constantly,” Romano added.

Expanded Dining Space

“We’ve added seating to better space out guests,” Romano said.

The main dining room has expanded into adjacent space, with tables rearranged for optimal social distancing while complying with Pennsylvania guidelines and accommodating more diners.

Online Ordering and Curbside Pickup

The We Are Inn offers seamless online ordering and payment, with dedicated curbside pickup to minimize indoor traffic. A separate takeout room beside the dining area allows quick deli purchases without disturbing seated guests.

“It’s a dedicated space for takeout, keeping pickup separate from the dining area,” Romano notes.

Limited-Contact Hotel Stays

Hotel bookings are fully online, mimicking Airbnb-style access: keys are pre-placed in rooms, and guests lock up and depart without front-desk interaction.

“We minimize face-to-face contact, ideal for travelers from various areas. Room sanitization has always been thorough and continues uninterrupted,” Romano said.
