Reflecting on Safety, Visitation, and Fall in Happy Valley Without Football

Reflecting on Safety, Visitation, and Fall in Happy Valley Without Football

Fall is an ideal time to experience Happy Valley. While we're accustomed to celebrating with 100,000 fans during football weekends, this year offers a more relaxed vibe. That's perfectly fine—we still want to celebrate with you.

Our new radio spot, featured on Sandy Fenton's “Let’s Talk Travel” AAA show in central Pennsylvania, highlights Happy Valley's exceptional tourism attractions. It also addresses the tough reality we're grappling with: the cancellation of the fall football season (and all Big Ten fall sports). Though anticipated, the news remains deeply disappointing.

This impacts our community's spirit profoundly. For many, fall in Happy Valley means Nittany Lions football. “Low-key” doesn't describe our seven home game weekends, alive with energy and Penn State pride.

The decision also delivers an economic blow amid ongoing business challenges.

Yet, it resolves summer-long uncertainty. With a clear path ahead—albeit not ideal—after exhaustive “what if” planning, we can now act decisively. Halting COVID-19's spread is critical, but so is tackling our economic realities. To offset empty stadium losses, we must warmly welcome visitors to Happy Valley.

Visitation is Essential for Recovery

Visitor traffic is vital for the survival of our hotels, shops, and restaurants. Fall is prime visiting season. As a safe, affordable drive-to destination, Happy Valley boasts abundant outdoor recreation. We're primed to attract families, individuals, alumni returning to their Penn State roots, and community supporters cherishing special memories. Encourage exploration beyond Beaver Stadium and downtown: discover historic towns, boutique shops, a vibrant craft beverage scene, farm-to-fork dining, and unique attractions.

Safe, Responsible Travel is Achievable

The Happy Valley Ambassadors Board (HVAB) firmly believes safe, responsible travel is not only possible but already happening. Our messaging underscores the rigorous health protections implemented by restaurants, shops, and lodging. Many have taken the #CentreStrong pledge, committing to guest safety. Penn State University has launched robust student safety campaigns, promoting masks and precautions on campus and beyond. Similarly, HVAB sets clear expectations for travelers, ensuring positive experiences for all.
