Tourism Insights: How Community Support Can Help the Arts Thrive in Happy Valley
Arts and culture form the vibrant fabric of any community. When stages fall silent, museums close their doors, and festivals are canceled, we lose vital elements that enrich our quality of life.
COVID-19's Devastating Impact on Creative Industries
The past year has spotlighted COVID-19's toll on hospitality—especially restaurants and hotels. Yet the creative industries have suffered equally. Many organizations still grapple with occupancy restrictions, uncertain futures, and varying public comfort with in-person events.
The financial fallout is stark. A Brookings Institution study from August 2020 revealed Pennsylvania's creative industries lost over $4.4 billion in sales and more than 97,000 jobs from April to July 2020 alone.

Broader Impact on the Arts
Nationwide, Brookings estimated 2.7 million job losses and over $150 billion in sales across creative sectors. The fine arts bore the brunt, shedding nearly 1.4 million jobs and $42.5 billion in revenue. Americans for the Arts reported a nationwide audience loss of 488 million.
Happy Valley's Arts Scene Poised for Recovery
Locally, recovery is underway, but scars remain. The Central PA Festival of the Arts, canceled for a second year, typically draws 100,000 visitors and generates $750,000 in hotel revenue—the summer's second-busiest weekend after move-in. It's just one example; venues and events hammered by 2020 losses eagerly await normalcy.
Artists, performers, and creators—many facing steep income drops—share this sentiment. Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra Maestro Yaniv Attar captures the void:
“An orchestra is a living instrument, and when it's not together, the instrument isn't assembled—we can't make music. As humans, it's like family; we miss being close on stage, breathing and phrasing as one, sharing with a live audience. This irreplaceable experience defines a performing artist's life.”
Build an Arts Bucket List to Support Local Creators
As we emerge from the pandemic, a fully engaged community is key to arts prosperity—virtually or in person. Create an “arts bucket list”: Attend a State Theatre concert, explore museums, catch a film at Rowland Theatre, or enjoy dance and symphony. You may uncover a deeper appreciation.
