Scholar Hotel State College: Historic Downtown Gem Blends Penn State Legacy with Modern Luxury
Scholar Hotel State College has officially opened its doors in the heart of downtown. While it's the newest addition to State College's hospitality scene, its distinctive charm lies in its century-old building, a longstanding fixture in the community.
“Scholar Hotel State College pays homage to Penn State’s rich history,” says Michael Balchin, director of sales. “From the architecture to our extensive photography collection, it offers a memorable stay unlike any other.”
Part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, the hotel occupies the historic Glennland Building at 205 E. Beaver Avenue. Constructed in 1933 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it boasts the distinction of housing Central Pennsylvania's first indoor swimming pool.
Owner Gary Brandeis ’88, president of Scholar Hotel Group, and his team meticulously preserved the building’s exterior while infusing modern amenities. Guest rooms feature versatile furniture for short or extended stays, adorned with captivating Happy Valley photographs, creating an indulgent, nostalgic retreat just minutes from Old Main.
“Experience downtown State College uniquely here,” Balchin adds. “It’s a one-of-a-kind stay.”
The on-site restaurant, Social, embodies the hotel’s relaxed yet upscale vibe. It features a full bar with craft cocktails and shareable small plates—perfect for business travelers, visitors, and locals seeking drinks, bites, and stunning downtown views.
As Penn Staters return to Happy Valley, Scholar Hotel State College invites them to rediscover their cherished memories in this refreshed historic haven.
