Discover Salem's Iconic Hawthorne Hotel: Historic Charm Since 1925

Discover Salem s Iconic Hawthorne Hotel: Historic Charm Since 1925

What property has been around since 1925, and is one of the most iconic and beloved hotels in Salem, Massachusetts? The renowned Hawthorne Hotel, of course!  This charming lodge welcomes everyone from New England to far away countries and beyond.

The hotel, named after American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, (author of The House of Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter), offers 89 rooms to its guests. One of the most fascinating pieces of information is the owner, Michael Harrington, worked at this hotel when he was 21 years old as a bartender.  A graduate of Harvard University, Mr. Harrington had an illustrious career in the state legislature, and bought the hotel property in the 1980’s. Because of his interest in the hotel industry, Harrington also bought the Publick House Historic Inn (Sturbridge, MA), and the Colonial Inn (Concord, MA).

According to Harrington, “I want to make sure every guest has a wonderful experience, and for us to deliver great service while they are here. The quality of standards and staff is a top priority and to always treat guests well. I also enjoy speaking with people to get their feedback.”

Most hotels since COVID have been hit hard by staffing challenges and determining how to bring guests back. Many have closed their doors to renovate due to the COVID shutdowns. The Hawthorne Hotel has made some changes, but is keeping the wholesome and non-modern style of design. “I do not have any desire in changing any part of the hotel to a contemporary look because of its historical aspect, but have freshened up the carpets and furnishings,” said Harrington.

Many employees have stayed with the Hawthorne Hotel over many years. Given the times, and changes in the service industry, this property has been fortunate in that regard. Currently, the hotel is flourishing with weddings, and visiting tourists are enjoying the many historical and fun sites that are offered throughout Salem.

One of the most popular events at the Hawthorne Hotel is the Halloween Ball, which is slated for October 23, 2021. “We are still having this party, but it will be scaled back to keep everyone safe,” said Harrington.

In New England, the fall season is approaching, and with that brings in many tourists. So, you can be sure that the Hawthorne Hotel and Mr. Harrington will be welcoming you every day.
