Tempe Tourism and Downtown Tempe Authority Unveil Iconic 'Our Tempe' Sign
The Tempe Tourism Office and Downtown Tempe Authority (DTA) have partnered to install a striking new public artwork in downtown Tempe: oversized letters spelling out "TEMPE." Titled Our Tempe, this landmark is positioned at the intersection of Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway, adjacent to the historic Hayden House.
Inspired by similar installations in other cities, Our Tempe is designed as a go-to destination for visitors and residents, serving as an ideal photo spot. Local artist and educator Kyllan Maney painted a vibrant design on the letters, representing diverse people coming together in Tempe.
Julie Kent, DTA's Director of Placemaking, stated, "For years, we searched for the perfect location for a TEMPE sign. When we relocated our office to the Hayden House, we knew it was ideal in front of this iconic building. We're grateful to Tempe Tourism for making this possible!"
Tempe boasts public art in surprising spots citywide, including artist-designed electrical boxes and newspaper racks in Downtown Tempe, sculptures at Valley Metro Rail stops, and neighborhood murals.
Michael Martin of the Tempe Tourism Office sought to enrich this public art scene. "I noticed city signs becoming popular photo spots elsewhere and wanted one for Tempe. We're excited to support this project as a source of community pride." Merestone, a local event production company, handled the installation.
The Tempe Tourism Office is creating a video showcasing the artwork and featuring an interview with the artist. A QR code on the sign's base links directly to the video.
