Long Bay Symphony: Myrtle Beach's Premier Professional Orchestra Delivering World-Class Performances

Long Bay Symphony: Myrtle Beach s Premier Professional Orchestra Delivering World-Class Performances

Visitors and locals alike are often surprised to discover that the Myrtle Beach area is home to the Long Bay Symphony (LBS), a professional orchestra delivering over 15 exceptional concerts annually from September through late April. Featuring world-class talent, the LBS presents a thrilling repertoire of classical and contemporary masterpieces, alongside robust educational programs for youth and adults. These include the Long Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra, Musicians in the Schools initiative, annual young people's concerts, master classes, and pre-concert lectures.

Named for the Long Bay stretch of the Atlantic along the region's beaches, the orchestra proudly serves Horry, Georgetown, and Brunswick counties. "We are that area's professional orchestra," explains Dr. Charles Jones Evans, Music Director and Youth Symphony Conductor. "We're not just Myrtle Beach or the Grand Strand."

The Long Bay Symphony's mission is "to enhance the cultural and artistic environment of our region by providing the highest-quality musical performances and programs which entertain and educate patrons of all ages." As a cornerstone of the Grand Strand's cultural scene, it is recognized as one of the Southeast's finest professional symphonies.

Founded in 1987 by Dr. Diana Swanner-Scroggins, a local music store owner who recognized the demand for a community orchestra, the LBS gave its debut performance in April 1988 at Wheelwright Auditorium on the Coastal Carolina University campus. Celebrating over 35 years of musical excellence, the orchestra continues to thrive.

Orchestra size varies by performance: major concerts feature 75-80 musicians plus chorale singers, while chamber events utilize around 35 players. Members include educators from local schools and Coastal Carolina University, as well as performers from regional ensembles. This dynamic organization enriches the Grand Strand, offering locals and visitors alike "Symphony at the Beach"—beloved music by world-class artists, right at home.
