Long Bay Symphony: Myrtle Beach's Premier Cultural Treasure and Professional Orchestra

Last weekend, we enjoyed an exceptional ‘Pops in the Park’ performance by the Long Bay Symphony at Marina Park at Grande Dunes. With ideal weather, a stunning waterfront setting, and outstanding music, it was unforgettable. As the Myrtle Beach area's professional orchestra, the Long Bay Symphony typically performs at the Myrtle Beach High School Music and Arts Center but also graces special events and venues year-round.
Many visitors and new residents are surprised to discover Myrtle Beach's own symphony orchestra—and an exceptional one at that. Founded in 1987 as the Long Bay Symphonic Society with about 36 musicians, it now features nearly 80 performers for major season concerts. Though planning ahead is key—with around 15 performances annually—aligning your travel with their schedule is well worth it.
Regular Sunday afternoon shows at the Myrtle Beach High School Music and Arts Center pair perfectly with a fine dining outing afterward. Special events like ‘Pops in the Park’ occur in picturesque locations such as Marina Park. Recent highlights included ‘That Fabulous French Flair,’ ‘Bernstein and the American Experience,’ ‘The Awakening of German Romanticism,’ and ‘Russian Masterpieces.’
My husband and I found this concert a refreshing alternative to our typical date night—far more memorable. The next event is the Long Bay Youth Symphony Spring Concert, featuring Youth Symphony Concerto Competition winners, at Coastal Carolina University’s Wheelwright Auditorium on April 24, 2019.
