6 Best Hikes on Lookout Mountain: Trails for Every Skill Level with Stunning Chattanooga Views

Lookout Mountain towers majestically over Chattanooga, offering breathtaking panoramas from its iconic rock outcroppings: Point Park and Sunset Rock. These summits reward hikers with sweeping views of the Georgia and North Carolina mountains, Watts Bar's cooling towers, Chickamauga Dam, downtown Chattanooga, the Tennessee River, Signal, Elder, and Raccoon Mountains, the towns of Tiftonia and Lookout Valley, and Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center. Explore these six top-rated hiking routes to reach the heights.

3 Short and Easy Options from Cravens House

Cravens House is the sole surviving Civil War-era structure on the mountain, once serving as headquarters for both Union and Confederate armies. Nearly destroyed during the Battle of Lookout Mountain, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1866. These three beginner-friendly trails are gently sloped with stairs and minimal technical sections.

#1: To Point Park
From the upper parking lot at Cravens House, take the trail right out the back, then veer left at the split toward Point Park. This gradual ascent passes beneath a massive survivor tree branch before joining another path. Turn left to skirt the bluff's base, ascending metal stairs to the museum and overlook for prime views (Note: Park entry requires a fee; approx. 2.2 miles round trip).

#2: To Sunset Rock
At the split, head right toward Sunset Rock. The trail winds around the bluff base under climbing routes, past valley vistas, to a rocky left split. Follow it to emerge atop Sunset Rock. Backtrack to Cravens House (approx. 2.5 miles round trip).

#3: Cravens House Loop via Sunset Rock and Gum Springs
From Sunset Rock, descend and turn left, then right onto the steep but short (0.5-mile) Gum Springs Trail. At the Truck Trail junction, turn right for 0.2 miles, then right again through historic railroad rock cuts. Spot the Rifle Pits Trail branching right—a technical singletrack. Continue past the next split to return to Cravens House upper lot (approx. 3 miles round trip).

3 Challenging (Yet Scenic) Long Hikes

These advanced routes exceed 10 miles, blending steep climbs, technical terrain, runnable paths, and jaw-dropping scenery.

6 Best Hikes on Lookout Mountain: Trails for Every Skill Level with Stunning Chattanooga Views

#1: Reflection Riding to Sunset Rock Loop (approx. 11 miles)
Park at Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center entrance. Ascend steeply via Kiddie Trail, then follow Skyuka Trail south to Skyuka Springs—a mountain gem. Continue on John Smartt Trail for 2 miles up to Bluff Trail. Roll along the bluff base for 2.5 miles with valley views. Bypass Gum Springs Trailhead, then climb right to Sunset Rock.

Descend Sunset Rock, turn left, then right onto Gum Springs Trail to a wide "road." Turn right, then left onto Lower Gum Springs. At the T, go right, ignoring two lefts and a No Horses trail. Follow the Nature Center sign left down the initial steep ascent back to your start.

#2: Extended Bluff Trail Variation (approx. 12.5 miles)
From Sunset Rock, turn right along Bluff Trail to climb toward Point Park or descend to Cravens House. For the latter, veer left onto Rifle Pits Trail to the Guild Trail (old railroad bed). Go left 0.2 miles, then right onto Lower Gum Springs. Follow as in #1 to close the loop.

#3: Point Park Bluff Traverse (approx. 13.5 miles)
From Point Park steps, turn right instead of backtracking 0.5 miles. Follow the longer Bluff Trail around the mountain's front brow. At the left descent, take it; then left again at the next split to Cravens House back lot. Continue past the left branch onto Rifle Pits Trail. Follow as in #2 via Guild Trail and Lower Gum Springs back to Kiddie Trailhead parking.

Tailor these routes to your fitness and ambition. They deliver challenge and unparalleled Lookout Mountain vistas that make every step worthwhile.
