Engrained Cafe at ASU Tempe: Sustainable, Flavorful Dining on Campus

Recently, I dined at Engrained Cafe, nestled on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus inside the Memorial Union (MU) on the second floor. This spot stands out immediately with its innovative, eco-conscious approach.

The host assigns a table number and directs you to the kitchen to select from the day’s seasonal offerings. The menu rotates based on fresh, in-season ingredients. Options include vibrant salads, artisan sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas, and even sushi rolls. My colleague and I shared a pepperoni pizza and a black bean quinoa burger with French fries. After paying, we settled at our table, where food is delivered. Complimentary beverages are available from a nearby station.

While waiting, we examined the informative wall displays. Engrained prioritizes sustainability: chairs crafted from recycled seat belts, energy-efficient appliances and lighting, renewable bamboo wall finishes, and grass mats. Educational elements highlight eco-friendly products and conservation practices throughout.

All produce is sourced within a 150-mile radius. The menu features organic vegetables, fair-trade coffee, cage-free eggs, all-natural chicken, and sustainable seafood, heightening anticipation for the meal.

Our dishes arrived promptly. The pepperoni pizza was exceptional—fresh, gooey cheese atop perfectly seasoned, crisped pepperoni. The black bean quinoa burger burst with flavor, blending a hearty patty with Swiss cheese, creamy avocado, and grilled red peppers. Crispy French fries rounded out the satisfying lunch.

Engrained Cafe delivers not just outstanding taste but a feel-good experience. Fresh, local ingredients and a minimized environmental footprint support the community. Ideal for unique, delicious campus dining.

Chattanooga has transformed far beyond its reputation as Americas dirtiest city. Today, one type of smoke graces our horizon with open arms: the hickory-scented plume from local barbecue pits. Chattanooga BBQ offers a diverse array of styles, blending influences into a true melting pot of flavors. Locals favor coleslaw atop pulled pork sandwiches, with sauces that merge Kansas Citys sweet, thick profile and Piedmonts tangy kick—often enhanced with Tennessee whiskey. Yet the Scenic Citys BBQ sce
