Seamless Valley Metro Rail Ride: From Tempe to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport
I recently rode the Valley Metro Rail and PHX Sky Train to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), discovering how effortlessly you can navigate Tempe, Phoenix, and nearby cities without a car. Tempe is just a quick 10-minute trip from PHX.
Starting from the Tempe Tourism Office, we purchased all-day light rail passes for $4.00 and boarded at the Third Street/Mill Avenue station. Passengers loaded efficiently, and soon we were smoothly heading toward the airport. The 28-station route spans from 19th Avenue/Montebello in Phoenix to Mesa Drive/Main Street in Mesa. Helpful route maps near the doors assisted this first-time rider. Gazing out the window, I enjoyed stunning valley views, relaxing in a way driving can't match.
At 44th Street/Washington, we transferred to the free PHX Sky Train, which connects seamlessly to Terminals 2, 3, and 4. The short ride delivered us to Terminal 4, where I was impressed by the vibrant local scene. Beyond typical fast food, it features exceptional eateries like Joe’s Real BBQ, Press Coffee, Wildflower Bread Company, Four Peaks Brewery (post-security), and Matt’s Big Breakfast (post-security). Local artwork, Arizona history exhibits, and a distinct Southwestern vibe make it one of the nation's most unique airports.
This Valley Metro Rail trip to PHX was memorable, showcasing our exceptional light rail serving Downtown Tempe, Phoenix, and Mesa, plus a standout airport. Tempe's robust public transit makes car-free exploration ideal for visitors and groups alike.
