Jerome Day Trip from Tempe: Art, History, and Stunning Views Await

Jerome, one of my top-favorite destinations, captivates with its eclectic vibe, artistic shops, and breathtaking scenery. Perched atop Cleopatra Hill at 5,200 feet between Prescott and Flagstaff, this historic mining town brims with character. Seeking a break from routine date nights, my partner Tauren and I chose Jerome for an exciting day trip—just two hours from Tempe, making it ideal for exploration.

We kicked off with breakfast at Snooze A.M. Eatery, right by Arizona State University Tempe Campus—a local must-visit. Their creative twists on American breakfast classics suit every palate. As a vegetarian, Tauren loved the Tofu Scramble with a pancake; I savored the Corned Beef Hash. Both dishes were delicious and satisfying.

The drive was pure joy: towering trees, lush grass, and majestic mountains. Arriving in downtown Jerome, we spotted the Art Studios Galleries building—a former high school now housing local artists' studios. Each room buzzed with unique creativity. We chatted with a resident artist who led us to the "science building" art gallery. The painter himself gave a personal studio tour and etching demo—an inspiring firsthand experience.

Following his recommendation, we lunched at the Haunted Hamburger. Offering panoramic Jerome views, this spot delivers exceptional burgers, sandwiches, and a customizable burger bar in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere with top-notch service.

We strolled off lunch amid Jerome's friendly streets: locals chatting, pub music flowing, doors wide open. Nellie Bly Kaleidoscope Shop stole the show—its mirrored walls, gold plating, and vibrant kaleidoscopes create an enchanting, spunky display that photos can't capture.

After hours soaking in the cool breeze and small-town charm, we headed back to the Phoenix metro. Dinner called at Postino's Annex in Downtown Tempe—perfect for conversation and flavor-packed bruschetta boards followed by a Chicken Mozzarella Panini. The chill vibe and evening breeze capped our perfect day.

Photo by Hayden Campbell. I’ve been blessed to call Vashon Island home since I was in first grade. This means that I have had nearly twelve summers to explore the beaches, woodlands, and lagoons of this picturesque island. Lucky for you, this is the inside scoop on how to spend a day you’ll never forget in one of the most unique locations in Washington. No matter where you are coming from, whether it’s from Port Orchard, Tacoma, or Seattle, you’ll need to catch a ferry to get onto the island
