Antelope Canyon Day Trip from Tempe: A Guided Adventure with DETOURS

It's often said that the journey matters more than the destination, but for those seeking efficiency without hassle, DETOURS of Arizona delivers. This guided day trip allowed my colleagues and me to explore Antelope Canyon effortlessly from Tempe.

As a lifelong Arizonan, Antelope Canyon felt like a legendary wonder rather than a local gem. DETOURS, the only Phoenix-area operator offering this tour, visits Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lee's Ferry, and Navajo Nation in one exhilarating 15-hour excursion covering 628 miles.

Pickup begins at 5:30 a.m. from most Phoenix hotels, including Tempe. Enjoy a comfortable ride with expert guides, complimentary snacks, water, and rest stops. Our journey traversed the Sonoran Desert, historic Route 66, and Navajo Nation, with sunrise views revealing unexpected desert greenery. Stops included Camp Verde for coffee and a Navajo Trading Post for authentic souvenirs.

The highlight: Lower Antelope Canyon, 276 miles northeast of Phoenix near Page, AZ, on Navajo land. A local Navajo guide led our 90-minute, one-mile tour via a steep staircase into swirling sandstone formations shaped by centuries of erosion. Sunlight beams create stunning visuals, perfect for photography—guides share the best angles.

After six hours, we lunched at a charming Page eatery before Horseshoe Bend. A one-mile trail revealed a dramatic 360-degree Colorado River bend with panoramic vistas; adventurers can edge closer for thrilling photos.

Next, Lee's Ferry offers rare Colorado River access, marking Grand Canyon's start and a historic crossing point. Nearby, Navajo Bridge spans Marble Canyon, one of few Arizona spots to drive over the river toward Grand Canyon's North Rim.

Returning via Flagstaff for dinner, we arrived in Tempe by 9:30 p.m. Whether new to Arizona or a longtime resident, this tour unveils must-see wonders.

DETOURS provides expert-led day and multi-day tours to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Apache Trail, and more. Relax without driving, fueling, or navigation worries. View the full route on Google Maps.

With two toddlers under three, we sought a day trip from Tempe thats close enough to avoid exhaustion but far enough to immerse us in the stunning Sonoran Desert. Our choice: the scenic Apache Trail Loop to the quirky town of Tortilla Flat. Just a short drive from the Phoenix metro area, it offers fun stops along the way. Check out our route on Google Maps to see the roads we took and drive times between destinations. We
