Thrilling Salt River Rafting: The Ultimate Day Trip from Tempe

Ready for an unforgettable adventure? Raft the stunning Salt River, just a 2.5-hour drive from Tempe!

My two co-workers and I recently embarked on this exhilarating day trip from Tempe to the Salt River—and it was incredible. We kicked off our morning at Gold Bar Espresso, a cozy local spot at 3141 S. McClintock Dr., Tempe, AZ 85282. Stepping inside feels like entering a warm home, with rich colors, dark wood, and eclectic decor creating an instant sense of relaxation. The expansive coffee menu features every imaginable drink, including creative mochas. My go-to is the Rolo mocha, but this time I tried the chai mocha—perfectly spiced and indulgent. We grabbed muffins to share and hit the road.

Our drive to the Globe area took about 2 to 2.5 hours. Salt River Rafting's base is at Hwy 60 and the Salt River, Mile Marker 293—just after crossing the river, follow signs to the left. Spot their trailer loaded with gear, a souvenir shop, changing areas, and portable restrooms. The friendly guides greeted us warmly, instantly putting us at ease. They fitted us with water shoes, helmets, life jackets, and oars before leading us to the rafts. Our guide, Cole, delivered a comprehensive, engaging safety briefing.

We practiced paddling briefly before tackling the first rapid—pure fun, excitement, and adrenaline! We got soaked but dried quickly. Rapids alternate with calm stretches, allowing skill-building and relaxation. Cole shared fascinating insights on the landscape, river history, and river life, keeping the group laughing with stories and jokes. He even let a co-worker take the helm briefly—a hit, though he stuck to his day job.

Our half-day trip wrapped around 1 p.m.; full-day adventurers enjoyed lunch and more rapids. Season runs February through early May—book ahead via https://raftingsaltriver.com/, though walk-ins may be possible.

Ravenous after, we headed to Irene's Real Mexican Food in Globe for hot, hearty enchiladas, endless chips, and salsa—we left stuffed and satisfied.

The return to Tempe flew by. This accessible adventure offers Salt River thrills right from Tempe. Check our route on Google Maps.
