By Melora Hathaway, Tempe Tourism Staff
Planning a memorable day trip from Tempe with the family? Escape the summer heat by heading north to the mountains and discover the Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde—a thrilling destination perfect for kids and adults alike.
Fuel up first with a delicious breakfast at Daily Jam on Mill Avenue. Savor a specialty omelet and cappuccino, while the kids enjoy fruit smoothies and French toast. Pro tip: Grab some fresh baked goods to go for a mid-day snack.
From there, hop on I-17 north toward Camp Verde. This scenic 90-minute drive gains over a mile in elevation, offering stunning views of Arizona's mountains and valleys. Stretch your legs at Sunset Point rest area for breathtaking vistas—a reminder of the desert state's hidden beauty.
Just three miles off the highway, arrive at the 104-acre Out of Africa Wildlife Park. Experience an authentic African bush safari with hundreds of animals roaming freely in a preserve setting. Highlights include the Tiger Splash and Giant Snake shows, Predator Feed, African Bush Safari, and a exhilarating Zip Line Tour. Allow 4-5 hours to enjoy all attractions; wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and embrace the adventure.
On the return, stop at Rock Springs Café in Black Canyon City (30 minutes from the park) for their famous homemade pies. Opt for takeout if lines are long, or browse the adjacent market for local treats. Chocolate cream pie is a must!
Back in Tempe, unwind with a light, healthy dinner at Original Chop Shop. Enjoy al fresco dining while the kids play chess on the life-size board—the ideal way to recap the day's highlights and plan your next outing.
