Brian McCartin is the new President & CEO of the Tempe Tourism Office. If you haven't met him yet, here's your chance to learn more about him, his favorite aspects of Tempe, and his vision for its future as a premier tourism destination.
Since starting his role, Brian has deeply engaged with our vibrant city. After immersing himself in Tempe's offerings, the Tempe Tourism team posed six key questions. His thoughtful responses highlight why Tempe stands out.
You spent 15 years at Travel Portland. What roles did you hold?
I began as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. As the destination evolved—with an expanded convention center, more international flights, and new hotels—my focus shifted to sales and services, becoming Executive Vice President of Convention and Tourism Sales. Before joining, I was a hotelier in Portland and served five years on Travel Portland's Board of Directors, including as Board Chair. In total, I contributed to Travel Portland for 20 years.
What excites you most about the Tempe Tourism Office?
Tempe is a remarkable destination brimming with appeal. Centrally located in the Phoenix area, it's an urban oasis with an upbeat, fun-filled vibe—refreshingly offbeat, as described. Beyond its college town energy, Tempe offers lively weekend events, a thriving arts and culture scene with Broadway shows, year-round outdoor activities, a vibrant food scene, affordable shopping, and numerous festivals. At Tempe Tourism, we share Tempe's story and invite visitors to experience it firsthand—they won't be disappointed.
If you had a few hours in Tempe on a Saturday, what would you do?
With festivals, sports, or cultural events often underway, I'd join one. Tempe boasts abundant shopping and attractions like the Desert Botanical Garden and Papago Park. I'd savor the culinary scene and local breweries. With family, we'd visit the SEA LIFE Aquarium or LEGOLAND Discovery Center.
What do you want Tempe to be known for?
I'm discovering Tempe's riches daily. Known for Arizona State University, it offers far more—a unique city in metro Phoenix. Couples, families, solo travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, arts lovers, foodies, sports fans, and festival-goers all find their perfect match. Safe and affordable, Tempe thrives with community and hospitality support. My goal: boost visitors and economic impact by positioning Tempe as a uniquely surprising destination.
What tourism changes do you foresee for Tempe?
Tempe holds strong tourism advantages, backed by city leadership, businesses, and community support for its economic role. Key developments include ASU expansions, new hotels, added flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor, streetcar construction, and a growing reputation for events. Travelers seek fresh alternatives, and Tempe's welcoming vibe will draw them.
What's your favorite handcrafted beverage—coffee or beer?
Mornings call for excellent coffee from Tempe's top shops. Afternoons or evenings, I prefer a cold craft beer—Tempe's scene is outstanding.
