Tempe Insider: Notes from a Native Resident – Introduction

By Delaney Wood

Excited to join the Tempe Tourism Office as its newest intern, I'm Delaney Wood. During my time here, I'll share a blog series on life in Tempe, my experiences as an Arizona State University student, and tips for the best things to do. As a lifelong Tempe resident, I offer an authentic insider's perspective on the city's top spots—or at least my personal favorites.

This summer, I worked full-time as a Personalization Marketing Intern at Insight Enterprises. Now, as a senior at Arizona State University studying Business, Hospitality and Tourism, and Spanish, I'm thrilled to intern with the Tempe Tourism Office. I'm actively involved in the Hispanic Business Students Association, Women’s Business Leaders Association, the ASU Philharmonia Orchestra, and serve as president of the ASU chapter of Collegiate DECA.

Amid my packed schedule, I recharge by exploring new places. My favorite days are spent in Tempe, discovering trendy shops and restaurants or enjoying a peaceful hike. What I love most about Tempe is our easy access to all of Maricopa County while maintaining a welcoming small-town feel.

I hope this series introduces you to exciting new activities in Tempe. I'm eager to share the insights I've gained growing up here!

Born in 1927 in the now-ghost town of Chrysotile, Arizona, my father instilled in me a deep fascination for the states old mining communities—places frozen in time with rich histories of boom and bust. This personal connection inspired a nostalgic day trip from Tempe to the copper mining towns of Superior, Miami, and Globe. Though theyve seen brighter days, these towns hold hope for revival. Arizona once led global copper production, employing thousands of miners, fostering thriving families, vi
