Dallas Arboretum Brings the 12 Days of Christmas to Life Each December

Each December the Dallas Arboretum transforms its gardens into a holiday wonderland with the highly anticipated 12 Days of Christmas exhibit. The show features 25‑foot gazebos, each meticulously designed to bring the classic English carol’s verses to vivid life.

The concept was born in Dallas, thanks to Arboretum enthusiasts Tom and Phyllis McCasland, who shared their vision with the Arboretum team. “About four years ago, I envisioned a spectacular Christmas that Dallas had never seen,” Tom recalled. “The 12 Days of Christmas offered a perfect narrative, and the Arboretum’s expansive grounds could host it. It would be an educational journey through England’s countryside, traditions, and culture—something Dallas could proudly showcase.”

Today the exhibit continues to enchant families and visitors worldwide. The transformation begins well before the holiday season, with preliminary construction underway during the Autumn at the Arboretum event. Inside the gazebos, artisans craft the scenery: fabric is sewn for period gowns, mannequins are hand‑painted, and costumes are fashioned to exacting detail.

As December approaches, crews collaborate closely with the horticulture team to ensure the surrounding foliage is immaculate. The Arboretum then dons its holiday regalia, with glass‑enclosed displays featuring life‑size Victorian‑costumed mannequins or whimsical animals, accompanied by curated music that evokes the spirit of the season.

Tom adds, “The exhibit’s scale delivers a genuine wow factor; it’s truly grandiose.” For a sneak peek, check out this behind‑the‑scenes look at one of the gazebos in construction.
