Ribera’s Drawings Return to Dallas: Meadows Museum Hosts Landmark Exhibition
For the first time in a quarter‑century, the masterpieces of Spanish artist Jusepe de Ribera will grace the United States. The Meadows Museum in Dallas is hosting the touring exhibition Between Heaven and Hell: The Drawings of Jusepe de Ribera, which runs through June 11.
Why this matters
Ribera is celebrated as a leading figure of Spain’s Golden Age, renowned for his dramatic paintings and prints. Yet his oeuvre of drawings—47 works spanning multiple themes—has rarely been showcased in the U.S. This exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation of his sketches ever, and the first major U.S. show of his drawings in 25 years.
What you’ll see
Visitors will encounter 47 drawings, 12 prints, 11 paintings, and a sculpture, arranged by thematic content rather than chronology. This structure offers fresh insight into Ribera’s artistic evolution.
Why the Meadows Museum is the perfect venue
Home to one of the world’s most extensive Spanish art collections outside Spain, the Meadows has long partnered with Madrid’s Museo Nacional del Prado. Its vision—to create “a small Prado for Texas”—made it an ideal host for this innovative showcase.
From now until June 11, the exhibition is open for visitors to experience. Consider adding it to a cultural itinerary in Dallas, perhaps pairing the visit with a tour of Southern Methodist University and the George W. Bush Library.
