Eduardo Chillida’s Masterpieces Now on Display at SMU’s Meadows Museum
Dallas boasts a reputation for world‑class art exhibitions, and the historic Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University is a prime venue for such events. This month the museum proudly presents Memory, Mind, Matter: The Sculpture of Eduardo Chillida, on view until June 3.
Eduardo Chillida, born in San Sebastián, began his artistic journey in architecture before turning to drawing and sculpture. His oeuvre is distinguished by the expressive use of iron, wood, and steel, creating dynamic forms that challenge conventional geometry.
The show features 66 original works, including hand‑drawn studies, unbalanced compositions, and striking iron and clay pieces. Chillida famously destroyed the clay works he deemed perfect, preferring imperfection over exactness—a philosophy that informs the raw, organic quality of his art.
His influence extends beyond Spain; his sculptures have been exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and he has earned prestigious honors such as the 1996 Jack Goldhill Award from the Royal Academy of Arts (London) and the 1984 Grand Award for Arts in France.
Visitors to the Meadows Museum can experience this extraordinary collection until June 3, gaining insight into one of Spain’s most celebrated sculptors.
