Originally from New York, Janel has embraced Dallas as her home. A family tradition of cooking—especially on her father’s side—sparked her love of food, beginning with countless afternoons in her grandmother’s kitchen. Since 2017 she has turned that passion into a thriving career, offering everything from meal‑prep and private or corporate events to interactive cooking classes, corporate catering, and her own cookbook. Every dish reflects her commitment to fresh, inventive cuisine, one meal at a time. Let’s explore Chef Fields’ journey.
Tell us about your journey to Dallas and love for food:
I’m no stranger to Dallas; my family and I lived here in the 1990s and I returned in 2014 after earning my bachelor’s degree. Food runs deep in my heritage—especially on my dad’s side—and cooking with my grandmother at a young age set the foundation for my culinary path. In 2017 I started treating cooking as a serious craft; it became a therapeutic outlet that continues to inspire me.
What makes Dallas home?
Dallas feels like a place where I can envision building a future with my husband and raising children. The city’s welcoming atmosphere and the close-knit friendships I’ve formed feel like family.
Describe your perfect day in Dallas.
Self‑care is a priority for me. My ideal day might begin with a relaxed morning at home or a stay at a downtown Dallas hotel. I enjoy shopping too; Eataly in NorthPark Center has become a favorite destination—I’ve visited several times for fresh pasta, bread, oils, and meats.
What's your favorite thing to eat in Dallas?
I love Velvet Taco for its modern take on classic flavors; I aim to visit once a week. I’ve also enjoyed the culinary experience at Nobu Dallas, which left a lasting impression.
Where can we find you on a weekend afternoon?
As a plant mom, I frequent Dallas Farmer’s Market, where I pick up plants from Ruibal’s and fresh produce from The Shed, grab a bite, and explore the market’s shops.
Tell us about a neighborhood you love.
Trinity Groves is a vibrant area buzzing with new businesses. I often work at Soiree Coffee Bar, then walk over to nearby restaurants. A nighttime stroll across the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge offers stunning views, and a short drive to the Bishop Arts District reveals even more local shops.
The go-to place to take out‑of‑towners?
When it’s safe and friends visit, I used to host them at Park Avenue on Fridays—an ideal spot for networking, good food, drinks, music, and a relaxed evening after a long week.
What is your favorite Dallas memory and what are you looking forward to in 2021?
The State Fair of Texas has been a yearly tradition for me, complete with concerts by artists like Jill Scott and H.E.R. My favorite fair foods include gizzards, fried Oreos, and Chef Kevin Ashade’s Wok Rice n’ Roll. Though I missed the drive‑thru last year, I’m eager to return this year in whatever format it takes. I also plan to explore East Dallas and the White Rock area, discovering new neighborhoods and their culinary scenes.
