Inside Dallas: A Conversation with Lindsey Farrar, Founder of CRWN Magazine
Welcome to Deep in the Heart of Dallas, our new series spotlighting stories from Dallas’s Black community. In this episode we sit down with Lindsey Farrar, founder and publisher of CRWN Magazine, to discuss her journey to Dallas, favorite local spots, and how the city fuels her creative vision.
What prompted your move to Dallas?
At 26 or 27, I relocated to New York to launch CRWN Magazine with my then‑partner, a close friend from Los Angeles. While building the brand in New York, we saw a growing natural‑hair movement on social media and realized there was a strong demand in Texas—our third‑largest market. Dallas, positioned between California and New York and a travel hub, offered the right mix of community and opportunity. A spontaneous pop‑up in a Dallas hotel lobby in 2016 drew a crowd that simply didn’t want to leave, confirming the city’s potential to nurture Black creatives.
What makes Dallas feel like home?
Family. Soon after we moved, we discovered we were pregnant. In cities like New York or California, finding space for a growing family can be a luxury. Dallas offers walkable parks, spacious backyards, and a slower pace that allows us to raise our child in a supportive environment.
Describe your perfect day in Dallas.
A sunny, but not scorching, day spent with our little one. Watching him explore our backyard is a joy, and we love taking him to the Dallas Arboretum or the Dallas World Aquarium to spark his curiosity.
Where’s your favorite place to eat in Dallas?
We adore Stock & Barrel in the Bishop Arts District. Their rotating menu keeps things exciting—though I’m now non‑dairy, their crab spaghetti with hollandaise is unforgettable. Their bread pudding is also a must‑try. Azucar, meaning “sugar” in Spanish, is our go‑to ice‑cream shop; it offers excellent vegan options even after two years of being non‑dairy.
Tell us about a neighborhood you love.
Bishop Arts is a favorite for its walkability, charming storefronts, and twinkling string lights at night. I also cherish the White Rock Lake area, where we bike and stroll with the family.
What is your favorite Dallas memory?
Hosting the CRWN Magazine event at Wax Space in 2019 was deeply rewarding. Collaborating with fellow Dallas creatives—especially Aarika Cofer of RosesRntRed Events—and receiving live feedback created unforgettable moments of community celebration.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I’m eager to explore more of the city, reconnect with local businesses like Pan African Connection Bookstore where we held our first Dallas event, and build new connections. After a period of isolation, creating moments of shared creativity feels essential.
