Deirdre Zahl: Charleston’s Vintage Jewelry Visionary
In honor of the Month of Love, we spotlight Charlestonians who turned their passions into thriving careers. Today we feature Deirdre Zahl, a designer who has built a boutique legacy in Charleston.

Name: Deirdre Zahl
Location: Charleston, SC
Current Title: Designer and Founder of Candy Shop Vintage
Education: Art & English, Skidmore College
After a decade in New York’s fashion and design scene, Deirdre launched Candy Shop Vintage—a boutique that curates hand‑picked vintage jewelry. Her unique pieces have graced the covers of Vanity Fair and InStyle, appeared in national blogs, and were featured on the iconic TV series Mad Men. Riding that success, she expanded with the Candy Shop Collection, introducing original designs such as the beloved Charleston Rice Beads.
How did you break into the fashion and design industry?
Right after college, I secured an internship with a New York‑based fashion media firm producing digital content for luxury brands. While I initially aimed for editorial roles, the exposure to giants like MAC Cosmetics and CHANEL convinced me to stay. When a full‑time offer came, I accepted—this experience honed my portfolio around high‑profile fashion and beauty clients and taught me the fundamentals of brand architecture, online presence, and cohesive storytelling.
What challenges did you face, and what did you learn?
Starting out, sourcing quality jewelry was daunting. I had no background in 3D design or manufacturing, and the learning curve demanded patience, capital, and resilience—especially as a woman in a male‑dominated industry. Over time I built a trusted network of artisans, learning that manufacturing can make or break a brand and that perfect results rarely come on the first try.
Where do you find inspiration?
Vintage details are my muse. At a recent auction of Bunny Mellon’s estate, I spotted a martini‑bracelet charm set—this sparked my own French 75 Cocktail Bracelet, which has become a fan favorite and conversation starter.
What’s your favorite piece from the Candy Shop Collection?
The Charleston Rice Beads stand out. From the launch luncheon at The George Gallery to the nostalgia they evoke—memories of mothers and grandmothers wearing them—they exemplify my brand’s blend of old‑world charm, modern flair, and collectible value.
Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Start as an apprentice. Jumping into business without industry insight is risky. The role demands a thick skin, long hours, and relentless learning. I follow Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000‑hour rule from Outliers—mastery requires sustained practice and dedication.
What would you tell your 21‑year‑old self?
Relax. The path to success isn’t linear. Embrace the twists and turns; enjoy the process rather than racing toward a finish line.
