Laurie Meyer: From Pharma to Portraits – Charleston s Gallery Co‑Owner

Laurie Meyer has turned a lifelong passion for painting into a thriving artistic career. After nearly two decades in the pharmaceutical industry, she made a bold transition to full‑time art, building a reputation that led to her co‑founding the Meyer Vogl Gallery on Meeting Street in Charleston.

Artist Profile

  • Name: Laurie Meyer
  • Location: Charleston, SC
  • Current Title: Artist & Co‑Owner, Meyer Vogl Gallery

Overcoming Challenges

Laurie notes that many obstacles for artists are self‑imposed. “It’s easy to doubt your worth when you compare yourself to others,” she says. “I learned to focus on daily effort and avoid comparisons, which kept me moving forward.”

Aha Moment

Her breakthrough came in stages: first place in Piccolo Spoleto, a teaching role in Italy, and finally the grand opening of the gallery in March 2024 with partner Marissa Vogl.

Sources of Inspiration

“Light and depth are my compass,” Laurie explains. “Whether capturing a landscape, figure, or architecture, I aim to bring hidden dimensions to the canvas. My students also inspire me; their growth fuels my own practice.”

Favorite Work

While in San Miguel de Allende, Laurie painted a young girl dancing on the steps of the Parroquia. The piece remains her favorite, a reminder of the spontaneous beauty she captured.

Studio & Workshops

Laurie’s studio, just a few steps from her home, smells of oil paint and is a hub of creativity. She hosts workshops focused on color theory and teaches in Charleston, Italy, Mexico, and Maine.

Advice for Young Artists

“Patience and perseverance are key. Hold onto your vision, and when opportunity knocks, take the plunge,” Laurie advises her 21‑year‑old self.
