The Haunting Legend of Alice Flagg: A Gothic Love Story from Murrells Inlet
With Halloween just two days away, it's prime time to grab those last-minute costume accessories and stock up on candy for the trick-or-treaters flooding Myrtle Beach neighborhoods.
As a special treat, here's a chilling local ghost story perfect for the season—who doesn't love a supernatural tale around All Hallows' Eve?
Set in mid-1800s Murrells Inlet, young Alice Flagg fell deeply in love with a humble lumberman during their courtship. But her physician brother disapproved, deeming his social status unworthy of her.
Undeterred, Alice met her lover secretly. He proposed, and she accepted, wearing his ring despite her brother's objections. She hid it on a ribbon around her neck, concealed beneath her dress, even claiming she had returned it.
Tragically, malaria claimed Alice's life. Her brother discovered the ring and flung it into the marsh.
She's buried at All Saints Cemetery near Pawleys Island.
Over 150 years later, sightings persist: Alice in her white burial dress, emerging from her old home, wandering the cemetery with one hand clutched to her chest—searching for her lost ring. Some report her along the marsh, forever seeking it.
Perhaps one day she'll find peace.
This Halloween, embrace the spirits, goblins, and ghouls. Plenty of spooky events await in the area.
Happy Halloween!
