Soukie Modern: Hand-Woven Moroccan Rugs and Décor with Heart in Palm Springs

As part of our "Love Local" series, we spotlight shops, restaurants, spas, attractions, and businesses that define Greater Palm Springs' vibrant personality—the stories that capture our destination’s unique experiences and steal our hearts. To know them is to love them.

What Does "Love Local" Mean to You?

"Good things and energy start at home, and our community is part of our home. We’re surrounded by it. It’s really important to support the people around you and amplify them so visitors know about them too."

For co-owners Kenya Knight and Taib Lotfi of Soukie Modern, a premier home décor and hand-woven rug boutique, social media has been a gateway to sharing their unique treasures worldwide. The couple met on Instagram in 2014 when Kenya searched for a Moroccan rug for her Los Angeles modeling agency office. Taib, born in Morocco and deeply passionate about Berber weaving artistry and culture, used the platform to sell authentic hand-woven rugs—catching Kenya’s eye and planting the seeds for a lasting friendship and thriving business.

Nestled in The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five in Palm Springs and inspired by Marrakech’s bustling souks, Soukie Modern blends Taib’s heritage in Moroccan textiles and Berber ancestry with the couple’s love for the desert lifestyle. “There’s so much to discover here,” says Kenya, a part-time Greater Palm Springs resident for over a decade after falling for a Desert Modernist home during a rainy open house tour. “Enjoy golf, tennis, hiking, exceptional dining, Joshua Tree National Park, local artistry, and a wellness-focused community that attracts creative souls.”

The meticulously curated space brims with imported gems, staged to spark home inspiration: vibrant stacked carpets, throw pillows, poufs; colorful bread baskets; ornate metal lanterns; and flowing kaftans ideal for poolside lounging.

Pre-COVID, they hosted rosé tastings—“which we’ll resume when safe,” Kenya notes—welcoming guests like family. Many linger for hours, finding inspiration and forging friendships.

This gem leaves a lasting mark on locals and visitors seeking one-of-a-kind pieces. Every sale brings pride, but for Kenya and Taib, it’s deeper: “One of our greatest joys is sharing Taib’s culture. Our shop is a love letter to the Berber people and Morocco.”
