Discover the Sweet Charm of the Starks Mayhaw Festival, May 14-16
Since moving to Louisiana eight years ago, I've discovered a world of new words and flavors, like mayhaw—a tart, berry-like fruit from trees, akin to smaller crabapples.

My first encounter was at a Lake Charles farmers’ market, where a vendor showcased jars of “Mayhaw Jelly.” Curious, I bought one—its sweet-tart taste pairs perfectly with toast or biscuits.
A few years later, news of the Starks Mayhaw Festival had me buzzing with excitement.
The festival features classic amusements: rides, games, live music, arts and crafts, and carnival eats. Highlights include a parade, queen’s pageant, talent show, auction, mayhaw jelly contest, and vendors offering homemade preserves.

I favor jam over jelly, and mayhaw jam is rare. In 2013, we found David Griffis from Buna, Texas, selling it. His sample was pure sweetness—likely balanced with ample sugar, as he uses four cups per six jars. He also crafts exceptional blackberry jam; we bought both.
